Not a Seat

My first public art project did not last very long. O well...I still like the idea.

Concept:

Inspired by the site and the importance of bringing environmental awareness to a large public audience, the seat alerts Fort Mason visitors to the issue of rising sea levels.

The seat is made of orange, polypropylene sandbags used for flood protection. The sandbags are arranged in a shape that resembles graph representing sea level rise in the last decade. Corresponding information is marked on the pavement with vinyl letters. Based on preliminary research, the pavement of this part of Fort Mason would be underwater at the high tide levels predicted for the year 2130.

Approaching visitors will be beckoned by the orange color and the sign “NOT A SEAT”.

On the back (facing the Bay) there will be a sign “FLOOD BARRIER” and information regarding specific sea level heights predicted for San Francisco during the next century (further research required).
